کوه خواجه همچنان در بین مسلمانان هم مقدس است چرا که مدفن خواجه مهدی از نواده گان امام علی است طبق روایات مردمی خواجه مهدی در قرن دوم هجری والی کرمان بود که در سفری وارد سیستان شد که توسط سارقین سمرقند به شهادت رسید و از انجا که بهترین نقطه و مرتفع ترین نقطه دشت سیستان که کوه خواجه است، وی را بر فراز کوه بردند و در ضلع شمالی کوه دفن کردند و از آن به بعد این کوه به اسم کوه خواجه مهدی و به تدریج کوه خواجه تغییر نام پیدا کرد.
